2024
PROTON opens R&D facility at Hangzhou Bay, China to strengthen its collaborative efforts with its existing partner Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd (Geely) in a move to complement its existing facilities in Malaysia.
PROTON took the next step in its evolution as a vehicle manufacturer with the official unveiling of its new EV sub-brand. To be deployed on future EV (electric vehicle) models, the new brand will be known as e.MAS.
PROTON achieved a historic milestone in its 41-year history when it broke through five million units produced barrier.
PROTON announced the expansion and official launch of its regional parts centre (RPC) at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. This latest addition to the company’s spare parts storage and distribution operations can reduce lead for spare parts time by 30% on the back of increased output capacity from PROTON Parts Centre Sdn Bhd (PPCSB) in West Malaysia.

PROTON launched a brand-new stamping line at the Tanjung Malim plant.
PROTON marked its 40th Anniversary by introducing the PROTON X90, a significant milestone as the brand embraces electrification with its inaugural New Energy Vehicle (NEV) model.
PROTON along with ACO Tech launched the PROTON Digital Xperience (PROTON DX), the first automotive digital experience centre in the country. Located within Quill City Mall, Kuala Lumpur, the centre offers visitors interaction with technology as well as leisure and lifestyle elements.
PROTON collaborates with Thailand's AAPICO Hitech Public Company Limited (Aapico) to produce dies, jigs, hot stamping parts, body assembled parts and chassis components.
PROTON forms strategic alliances with three well-known E-Bidding Companies (EBC) to streamline the trade-in car disposal process for customers. Through partnerships with myTukar, MUV, and CARSOME, the company believes it has advanced significantly in providing customers with a quicker and more efficient path to owning new cars.

PROTON has reached a significant milestone in its pursuit of manufacturing high-quality vehicles. The PROTON Test Centre, the company's in-house testing facilities in Shah Alam, has been granted ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation by Jabatan Standard Malaysia (Department of Standards Malaysia), operating under the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI).
PROTON signs new Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with smart Automobile to explore possibility of local assembly at Tanjung Malim.

PROTON signed an agreement to appoint CMH Group as the distributor for PROTON vehicles in South Africa.
PROTON unveiled its locally assembled 1.5L TGDi three-cylinder engine for local and export markets at the new hi-tech assembly line in Tanjung Malim.
PROTON established a new subsidiary, PROTON New Energy Technology (PRO-NET) to spearhead smart distributorship and own brand NEV business.

2021
Al-Haj Automotive, distributor of PROTON in Pakistan rolled out the locally-assembled PROTON Saga at their new green field production plant in Karachi.
PROTON launched its brand gallery, dubbed the Gallery of Inspiration in Centre of Excellence complex. It marked the next step in the company’s rebranding journey that began in 2019.
2020
The Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), DRB-HICOM and PROTON signed Memorandum of Understanding for next-generation vehicle (NxGV) hub.
Launch of the 2020 PROTON X70, which was built on a completely new production line at the new Tanjung Malim plant. It came with enhanced features and new technology like the 7-Speed Dual Clutch Transmission (7DCT).
PROTON collaborated with the Ministry of Health to combat the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Malaysia by providing 50 units of the PROTON X70 to assist in logistical operations and producing 60,000 face shields.
PROTON launched the PROTON Saga Anniversary Edition to commemorate Saga’s
35th Anniversary.
The first shipment of PROTON Saga CKD kits was sent to Kenya as an initiation of local assembly in the country.
Launch of the 2020 PROTON X70 in Brunei where it was ranked in the top 3 of its segment.
Launch of the PROTON X50, the second SUV offering by PROTON that offers Level 2 autonomous driving and intelligent technologies.
2019
PROTON entered an agreement with its partners in Beijing:
- Strategic partnership between PROTON and Al-Haj Automotive to initiate assembly operation and distribution of PROTON cars in Pakistan.
- Collaboration between PROTON and China Construction Bank (CCB) to facilitate the research and development (R&D), as well as major infrastructure development in Malaysia.
Launch of the 2019 PROTON Saga, PROTON Persona, PROTON Exora and PROTON Iriz, which packed with intelligent connectivity technology.
Incorporation of ACO Tech, a joint venture between PROTON, Altel Communications and ECARX (Hubei) Technology for the development of car connectivity technology and products.
Rollout of the first 2020 PROTON X70 from the production line at PROTON’s Tanjung Malim plant.
The PROTON X70 became one of the official vehicles of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2020.
PROTON achieved remarkable performance where it recorded the highest sales growth among the top-5 automotive brands in Malaysia and reclaimed 2nd position in the automotive market.
2018
PROTON and Geely signed an agreement in Hangzhou, China to deepen its strategic cooperation on electrification & globalisation.
Launch of the PROTON X70, PROTON’s first premium SUV which infused with new intelligent technology.
2017
DRB-HICOM entered a strategic partnership with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co, Ltd. in PROTON.
2016
PROTON introduced MyPROTON, a mobile application intended to provide convenience to PROTON customers throughout their ownership of PROTON cars.
2015
Development of the new PROTON Ertiga commenced. It was Malaysia’s first EEV Certified MPV-B and officially launched in the following year.
2014
PROTON launched the PROTON Iriz, the first Malaysian car to get a 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating before its launch.
2013
PROTON launched the new PROTON Perdana specifically for official use by Malaysian government.
Launch of the PROTON Suprima S, which received a 5-star ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) safety rating.
The PROTON Prevé was awarded a 5-star ANCAP safety rating.
2012
PROTON launched the PROTON Prevé, dubbed as the company’s first car that complied to global regulations and market requirement.
PROTON became one of the members of DRB-HICOM Berhad.
2011
The CamPro CFE, PROTON’s first turbo charged engine was introduced in the PROTON Exora.
2010
Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad launched the EMAS concept car at the 80th
Geneva International Motorshow.
The PROTON Satria Neo R3 Lotus Racing was launched to commemorate the return of the Lotus name to Formula 1.
PROTON launched the PROTON Inspira, a performance-oriented saloon and the first PROTON car to feature paddle shifters.
2009
The PROTON Exora, the first MPV developed in-house by PROTON was launched.
2008
The new PROTON Saga was launched as a new beginning of the people’s car.
Rollout of PROTON’s 3 millionth car – a new Saga - from the PROTON’s plant in Shah Alam.
2007
PROTON launched the PROTON Persona, a sedan re-engineered and optimized from existing platform.
2006
The PROTON Satria Neo, a replacement for the first generation Satria using a new platform developed in-house by PROTON was launched.
PROTON Savvy Fuel Efficient Drive: 1,608 km around Peninsular Malaysia completed with 1 ¾ tank of fuel, finding a place in the Malaysian Book of Records.
2005
PROTON launched the PROTON Savvy, the first Malaysian car to receive TUV certification for quality.
2004
PROTON launched the PROTON Gen.2, which powered by the 1.6-litre CamPro engine and was built on a homegrown platform developed in-house.
2003
PROTON R3 Racing Team was formed to participate in motorsports racing, develop accessory for PROTON cars and organise motorsports events.
PROTON opened its second manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim which equipped with the latest manufacturing systems and technology.
2002
The PROTON Arena, a two-door pick-up was launched.
2001
The PROTON Juara, PROTON’s first MPV was launched.
2000
PROTON launched the PROTON Waja, the first Malaysian car to be fully developed locally.
Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad unveiled the prototype CamPro Engine at the Lotus Factory in Norwich, United Kingdom.
1998
Launch of the PROTON Perdana V6 and PROTON Satria GTi.
1996
The PROTON Tiara, a compact car was launched.
PROTON acquired a controlling interest in Lotus Group International Limited.
PROTON rolled out its 1 millionth car and launched the two-door PROTON Putra (1.8 PROTON Wira Coupe).
1995
PROTON launched its first luxury sedan, PROTON Perdana.
PROTON officially opened the PROTON Casting plant.
First shipment of PROTON cars to Indonesia.
1994
PROTON cars made their debut at the Cyprus International Trade Fair.
First shipment of Left-Hand-Drive PROTON Wira cars to Europe.
The PROTON Satria, PROTON’s first three-door hatchback aimed at the sports-hatch market was launched.
1993
The new R&D building in Shah Alam was officially opened.
The PROTON Wira, a practical and elegant four-door saloon was launched.
The PROTON Wira Aeroback, a sporty-look five-door hatchback version of the Wira was launched.
1992
PROTON listed on the Main Board of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange.
PROTON made its maiden entry into the African continent through export to Malawi.
PROTON Parts Centre Sdn. Bhd. was incorporated to manage the overall spare parts business covering sourcing, warehousing, and distributing of PROTON genuine parts in the domestic and overseas markets.
PROTON Saga Iswara, named after the great Helen butterfly (Papilio Iswara) of Sarawak was launched. It featured a new grille, slimmer headlights, grooved taillight clusters, plastic bumpers and side mouldings.
1991
The Engine Parts Machining and Transmission Assembly Plant commenced operation.
1989
Market launch in Singapore.
1988
Shipment of first PROTON Saga to Ireland for European debut.
PROTON Saga made its public debut at the British International Motorshow. PROTON won three Prestigious awards (two golds and one silver) for quality coachwork and ergonomics.
1987
PROTON Cars (UK) Ltd. awarded distributorship for UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Market launch of the PROTON Saga 1.5 Aeroback model.
1986
Bangladesh became the PROTON Saga’s first export destination.
1985
Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad officially launched the PROTON Saga, Malaysia’s first national car.
1983
Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional (later known as PONSB) incorporated.
Joint-venture agreement signed between HICOM (70%), MMC (15%) and its marketing arm, MC (15%).
1982
The Cabinet Ministers of Malaysia approved the National Car Project.
1980
Cabinet approved the establishment of Heavy Industries Corporation of Malaysia (HICOM).
HICOM was incorporated with the Finance Minister Inc. as shareholder.
1979
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Industry, Dato’ Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad requested for a study on the feasibility of a Malaysian manufactured car.
The National Car Project was presented to the Government of Malaysia.
